Why isn't your business showing up on Google? 7 causes and fixes

If you search for your business on Google and can't find it, one of these 7 causes is likely to blame. Here's how to check and fix each one.

You search for “dentist in Chula Vista”, “auto repair near me” or your own business name, and other businesses show up. Not yours. It's one of the questions we hear most, and the answer is almost always one of these seven causes.

1. You don't have a website (or Google doesn't know it)

Social media helps, but Google ranks websites. If your site is new, Google may not have crawled it yet. Add it to Google Search Console and submit your sitemap. It's free and speeds up indexing.

2. Your Business Profile isn't verified

To show up on Google Maps you need a verified Business Profile. Many owners created one years ago and never finished verification, or someone else claimed it. Check business.google.com to confirm it's yours and active.

3. You picked the wrong category

Your primary category is the strongest factor in local search. A practice listed as “Medical clinic” instead of “Dentist” is competing in the wrong search. Choose the most specific category and add secondary ones.

4. Your site is slow or broken on mobile

Google measures the mobile experience. If your page takes more than 3 seconds to load, visitors leave and Google notices. Test it with our free audit.

More than half of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load.

5. Your page doesn't say what you do or where

It sounds obvious, but many sites say “Welcome” instead of “Family dentist in Chula Vista”. Your title, main heading and copy should mention your service and city naturally.

6. You have too few reviews

Reviews are a trust signal for Google and for customers. A business with 80 reviews at 4.8 stars almost always beats one with 5. Ask systematically: a text after every job or a QR code at your counter.

7. Your details don't match across the web

If your address or phone differ between Facebook, directories and your site, Google can't tell which is correct. Make your name, address and phone (NAP) identical everywhere.
